Tastes Like Chicken

Back in "the day" a Geek was someone lumped in with Nerds, Dweebs and Spazzoids (little throwback to my 80's peeps there). Even before that, a geek (notice the lower case "g") was a performer who's act revolved around biting the heads off live chickens.

Hmmmm. Suddenly I have the urge to pick up an 8-piece from KFC.

Anyways, today the name "Geek" has many sub-classes, but all have the same meaning; "A peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc." (thanks Wikipedia).

As a modern Geek, it is difficult to carve out an identity. Are you a Computer Geek? Does your "Geek-ness" flourish as the Comic Book variety? Or does your heart beat the blood of a Star Trek Geek? Heck, these days, you can be a Gardening Geek, a Country Music Geek, or even a Needlepoint Geek. If there is something that you feel passionately about, and if it is something that's very mention gets you excited like a kid on Christmas, then that is your place in the multi-flavored planet of Geeks.

Be proud of your Geek colors. Raise your banner high, sound your barbaric YAWP, and charge headfirst into a world that may not understand you but most assuredly needs you!

Welcome to the suck.

With my 31st birthday coming up soon, I am going through my anual "self-evaluation" and once again I have found myself coming up wanting. I have a loving wife (and more often than not, she is my saving grace). However, I have a job that I hate, live in a neighborhood that I hate, dont ever have enough money to afford the things I want (or in some cases, need), and for some reason I havent taken my health seriously (seriously, I get winded going up my stairs).

It's not all bad. Like I said, I love my wife. We play with an awesome guild in WoW ("World of Warcraft" for those not in the know). Our car is still running (for now). And as much as I hate my job, I at least have a steady paycheck.

My biggest problem right now is that I feel like we are just "getting by". Where's the drive? Where's the passion? Where's the motivation to be more than the sum of our parts?

In an ideal world, I would have enough money to open a pub. Brewing my own hard cider, and serving my apple cider pork ribs. There would be a little stage for live music. It would be the kind of place where you could kill and afternoon with your friends, and not feel like you have to be "somewhere else". This is not, however, an ideal world.

I live in the world, where day in and day out I have to grasp at reasons to get out of bed. To find the motivation to get told for 8 hours at a time, that I dont know what I'm talking about, and that I have the worst service ever. I live in the world, where I make "alright" money, however my paycheck alone is not enough to cover the bills. I live in the world where I know I need new shoes, and the car needs new shocks, but I just dont have the money to do anything about it. I live in the world of constant fear that I am going to wake up to find that the power has been shut off, the cell phones are disabled, or there is an eviction notice on the front door.

I live in the world of the corporate lower-class. I hold a mid level job at a multi-billion dollar company, and I can barely afford the Ramen it takes to not go hungry.

And I dont know what to do about it.

As I'm sure everyone has seen by now (if not click HERE) Disney is in the process of purchasing Marvel for 4 Billion dollars. I must admit that since this morning's announcement, I have gone through my own variation on the "7 stages of grief".

1. SHOCK & DENIAL: WTF?!?! This is going to ruin EVERYTHING good that Marvel has built over the past 75 years!

2. PAIN & GUILT: If I had spent more money on comics instead of video games, Marvel wouldn't HAVE to sell.

3. ANGER & BARGAINING: Maybe the deal wont go through. Maybe they wont have to sell.

4. DEPRESSION", REFLECTION, LONELINESS: I remember all the years reading comics. They taught me so much more about how the world works than Disney ever did.

5. THE UPWARD TURN: It might not be so bad. Both Disney and Marvel are very strong companies.

6. RECONSTRUCTION & WORKING THROUGH: This could actually be great for both companies. They both have a lot of unique characters and stories to offer each other's fan bases.

7. ACCEPTANCE & HOPE: I see this as a mutually beneficial business arrangement between two powerhouse companies. I am looking forward to seeing what joint projects they come up with in the future.

All said and done, while this move deffinately caught me off guard, I am actually optimistic. I cant wait to see what collaborations Marvel and Disney produce together.

However, the second that Hulk starts singing "Under The Sea"...... I am so outta here.

*yawn - stretch*

Over the years, and I have a variety of social media outlets. I have run the gauntlet of MySpace, Live Journal, Facebook, Twitter, Word Press. Not to mention an assortment of personal and corporate message boards. Now, I feel like it's time to consolodate my online ponderings and premonitions to 2 places.
